Based Rollup
A rollup design that hands transaction sequencing directly to the base layer's own block proposers, rather than running a separate, independent sequencer.
A based rollup (also called an L1-sequenced rollup) is a rollup design that hands transaction sequencing directly to the base layer's own block proposers, rather than running a separate, independent sequencer that orders the rollup's transactions on its own.
Because sequencing comes directly from the base layer, a based rollup inherits the base layer's liveness and censorship-resistance properties more directly than a rollup with its own independent sequencer (see Kaavon's "Sequencer" glossary definition) does, at the cost of being more tightly coupled to the base layer's own block timing and any of its reorgs.
Examples
- A based rollup's transactions are sequenced directly by the base layer's own block proposers, rather than by a separate operator the rollup runs itself.
- A based rollup inherits the base layer's censorship-resistance more directly than a rollup relying on its own independent, potentially centralized sequencer.
