DeFi Options Vault (DOV)
A DeFi product that automates running an options-selling strategy, such as a covered call, on depositors' funds and distributes the resulting premium income.
A DeFi Options Vault automates an options-selling strategy — most commonly a covered call (see Kaavon's "Covered Call" glossary definition) or a protective-put-funding variant — on behalf of depositors who contribute their assets into a shared vault (see Kaavon's "Vault (DeFi)" glossary definition). The vault periodically writes options against the pooled assets, typically auctioning them off to market makers, and distributes the resulting premium income back to depositors after fees, letting users earn options-selling yield without manually managing individual options positions.
DOVs make running an options-income strategy far more accessible to ordinary depositors, but they don't eliminate the strategy's underlying risk — depositors in a covered-call DOV still give up potential upside if the underlying asset rallies sharply past the strike, and the vault's returns depend heavily on the premium pricing achieved in each auction cycle, which in turn depends on prevailing market volatility and options demand. A DOV's advertised yield reflects a specific risk-return tradeoff rather than a risk-free return, and that yield can vary significantly between cycles.
Examples
- A depositor in a covered-call DOV earns premium income each cycle but still forgoes any price appreciation above the strike the vault sold options against.
- A DOV's realized yield fluctuates from cycle to cycle based on the premium achieved in each options auction, which depends on prevailing market volatility.
