DePIN
Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks — projects that use token incentives to crowdsource real-world physical infrastructure.
DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks) describes projects that use token incentives to crowdsource the deployment and operation of real-world physical infrastructure — such as wireless network coverage, data storage, or sensor networks — from a distributed base of individual participants rather than a single centralized operator.
Participants typically contribute hardware or a service and are rewarded with the network's token, intended to bootstrap infrastructure faster or more cheaply than a traditional, centrally-funded rollout. See Kaavon's dedicated DePIN guide for how this actually works and its documented trade-offs.
Examples
- A DePIN wireless network might reward individual participants with tokens for hosting a hotspot that provides coverage to the broader network.
- DePIN projects face the same fundamental token-incentive sustainability questions as other crypto-incentivized activity once initial rewards taper off.
