Fear and Greed Index

A composite sentiment indicator, scaled 0 to 100, combining several market data inputs into a single reading intended to gauge whether the market is fearful or greedy.

The Fear and Greed Index is a composite sentiment indicator, scaled from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed), that combines several underlying market data inputs — commonly including volatility, trading volume, social media sentiment, and market dominance — into a single reading intended to gauge the market's overall emotional state.

Several different organizations publish their own version of a crypto Fear and Greed Index, each using a somewhat different specific methodology and input weighting, so the exact reading can differ meaningfully between sources even on the same day — it's a sentiment gauge, not a price-prediction tool, and different versions aren't directly comparable to one another.

Examples

  • A Fear and Greed Index reading near 0 reflects extreme fear in the underlying market data; a reading near 100 reflects extreme greed.
  • Different organizations' Fear and Greed Index versions use different underlying methodologies, so their readings on the same day can meaningfully differ.
