GameFi
The broad category of blockchain-based games that integrate financial elements, such as tradable in-game assets, token rewards, or play-to-earn mechanics.
GameFi is a broad term for blockchain-based games that incorporate financial mechanics directly into gameplay, most commonly by representing in-game items or currencies as tokens or NFTs that players can genuinely own, trade, and sometimes earn through play, such as under a play-to-earn (see Kaavon's "Play-to-Earn (P2E)" glossary definition) model. The category spans a wide range of designs, from games where blockchain ownership is a core gameplay feature to ones where it's a comparatively minor addition layered onto otherwise conventional game mechanics.
GameFi projects have faced persistent design tension between making a game genuinely fun to play and building sustainable token-reward economics that don't collapse once new player inflows slow down — many early play-to-earn-style GameFi projects saw their token economies unwind sharply once reward emissions outpaced genuine organic demand for the game's tokens or items. This has pushed more recent GameFi design toward prioritizing core gameplay quality first, with financial and ownership elements treated as a secondary layer rather than the primary draw.
Examples
- A GameFi project might let players earn tradable tokens for completing in-game tasks, while also letting them buy, sell, and upgrade NFT-based characters or items.
- Several early GameFi token economies collapsed once new player inflows slowed, since token emissions had outpaced genuine organic demand for the underlying game assets.
