Gasless Transaction
A transaction where the end user doesn't need to directly hold or pay the network's native gas token, with the fee covered by another party instead.
A gasless transaction is one where the end user doesn't need to directly hold or pay the network's native gas token, with the actual fee covered by another party — commonly an application sponsoring it through a paymaster (see Kaavon's "Paymaster" glossary definition), or the fee being deducted from the transaction's own token amount instead.
Removing the need to acquire a separate gas token before a user's very first transaction is a significant, documented onboarding improvement, since requiring an entirely new user to first acquire an unfamiliar native token just to pay fees has historically been a real barrier to adoption.
Examples
- A gasless transaction lets a brand-new user interact with an application without first needing to separately acquire the network's native gas token.
- Removing the gas-token acquisition step is a documented, real improvement to onboarding new users who have no prior experience with that specific network.
