Know Sure Thing (KST)
A momentum indicator combining four smoothed rate-of-change calculations at different periods into a single weighted line.
Know Sure Thing (KST), developed by Martin Pring, combines four separate rate-of-change calculations, each measured over a different lookback period and individually smoothed, then summed together with different weights into a single line.
Combining multiple timeframes into one indicator is intended to capture momentum across short, medium, and longer-term cycles simultaneously, aiming to identify major trend changes rather than short-term fluctuations. See Kaavon's dedicated KST article for the full calculation.
Examples
- KST's combination of four different-length rate-of-change calculations is intended to reflect momentum across multiple timeframes at once, not just one.
- KST is commonly paired with its own signal line (a moving average of KST itself), similar in spirit to how MACD uses a signal line.
