Network Effect
The phenomenon where a network becomes more valuable to each user as more people join and use it, often cited as a key driver of a blockchain's long-term competitive advantage.
A network effect occurs when a network or platform becomes more valuable to each individual participant simply because more people are already using it — more users means more potential counterparties to transact with, more liquidity, more developers building compatible tools, and more overall activity reinforcing the network's usefulness. This dynamic can create a self-reinforcing cycle where an early lead in adoption becomes progressively harder for competitors to overcome.
Network effects are commonly cited as a central argument for why an established blockchain with a large existing user base, developer ecosystem, and liquidity can maintain a durable competitive advantage over newer, technically similar competitors, even if the newer network offers meaningfully better technical performance in isolation. Metcalfe's Law (see Kaavon's "Metcalfe's Law" glossary definition) is one specific, commonly cited quantitative attempt to formalize how a network's value might scale with its number of users.
