Omnibus Account

An omnibus account is a single custodial account, controlled by an exchange or custodian, that holds crypto assets on behalf of many underlying customers collectively, rather than giving each individual customer their own separately identifiable, segregated on-chain address. Individual customer ownership and balances are tracked internally in the custodian's own private records, not directly visible or verifiable on the blockchain itself.
An omnibus account is operationally simpler and more cost-effective for a custodian to manage at scale than maintaining segregated custody (see Kaavon's "Segregated Custody" glossary definition) for every individual customer, but it places more reliance on the custodian's own internal recordkeeping accuracy and honesty, since customers can't independently verify their specific holdings on-chain the way they could with a segregated, individually addressed account. This structure is part of why proof of reserves (see Kaavon's "Proof of Reserves" glossary definition) and related transparency practices matter especially for custodians relying primarily on omnibus account structures.
