Omnichain
Describing a protocol or application designed to operate natively across many blockchain networks simultaneously, rather than being deployed separately on each one.
Omnichain describes a protocol or application designed to operate natively across many blockchain networks simultaneously — generally through an underlying cross-chain messaging layer — rather than being deployed as separate, independently-managed instances on each individual chain.
An omnichain design is intended to give users and liquidity a more unified experience across multiple networks, directly addressing the liquidity fragmentation (see Kaavon's "Liquidity Fragmentation" glossary definition) that having many separate, chain-specific deployments of the same application can otherwise create.
Examples
- An omnichain application can let a user interact with a single unified version of the protocol, rather than needing to use separate deployments on each chain.
- An omnichain design is specifically intended to reduce the liquidity fragmentation that many separate, chain-specific deployments of the same application can create.
