Satoshi
The smallest unit of Bitcoin, equal to one hundred-millionth of a single BTC.
A satoshi (often shortened to "sat") is the smallest denomination of Bitcoin, equal to 0.00000001 BTC, named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Because a whole bitcoin can represent a large amount of value, transactions and balances are often expressed in satoshis for precision, especially for smaller amounts.
Examples
- A Lightning Network payment might be denominated in satoshis rather than whole bitcoin.
- One bitcoin is equal to 100,000,000 satoshis.
