Sidechain
A separate blockchain connected to a main chain, often used to extend its capabilities.
A sidechain is an independent blockchain that runs alongside a main chain and is connected to it through a two-way bridge, allowing assets to move between the two.
Sidechains often have their own rules and consensus mechanism, which can let them offer different trade-offs around speed, cost, or features than the main chain they connect to.
Examples
- A sidechain might process transactions faster or more cheaply than the main chain it connects to.
- Moving an asset to a sidechain typically involves locking it on the main chain and minting an equivalent on the sidechain.
