Structured Note

A financial instrument combining a bond-like component with a derivative tied to a crypto asset's performance, offering a customized risk-return profile such as partial downside protection.

A crypto-linked structured note is a financial instrument that combines a bond-like component with an embedded derivative whose payoff depends on a crypto asset's price performance, packaged together into a single customized product typically sold to institutional or accredited investors. Common structures include offering partial downside protection (limiting losses if the underlying asset falls) in exchange for capped upside, or offering enhanced yield in exchange for accepting some principal risk if the underlying asset performs poorly enough.

Structured notes let investors access a customized risk-return profile tailored to a specific market view, but they typically carry meaningful complexity, limited liquidity before maturity, and counterparty credit risk tied to whichever institution issued the note, since the investor is ultimately relying on that issuer actually honoring the note's payout terms at maturity. Evaluating a structured note requires understanding its specific payoff formula in detail, since two notes with superficially similar marketing can have very different actual risk-return profiles depending on their precise terms.

Examples

  • A structured note offering partial downside protection on Bitcoin might cap an investor's upside in exchange for limiting losses if Bitcoin's price falls below a specified threshold by maturity.
  • A structured note's actual risk-return profile depends entirely on its specific payoff formula, which is why two notes with similar marketing descriptions can behave very differently in practice.
