Threshold Signature

A signature scheme requiring a minimum number of participants to jointly produce one valid signature.

A threshold signature scheme requires a minimum number of participants (out of a larger group) to jointly and cryptographically contribute to producing a single valid signature, rather than requiring separate signatures from each.

This differs technically from traditional multisig, which typically requires multiple separate, individually verifiable signatures rather than one combined signature.

Examples

  • A threshold signature scheme might require 3 of 5 participants to jointly produce one valid signature.
  • Threshold signatures can appear as a single signature on-chain, unlike traditional multisig's multiple signatures.
