True Strength Index (TSI)
A momentum oscillator built from double-smoothed exponential moving averages of price momentum, designed to filter noise while staying responsive.
The True Strength Index (TSI), developed by William Blau, applies exponential smoothing twice to an asset's price momentum, aiming to filter out short-term noise while remaining more responsive than a more heavily-smoothed alternative.
It oscillates around a zero line, with positive readings generally associated with upward momentum and negative readings with downward momentum, and is commonly paired with its own signal line for crossover-style signals. See Kaavon's dedicated TSI article for the full calculation.
Examples
- TSI's double-smoothing is specifically intended to balance noise reduction against responsiveness, rather than maximizing one at the expense of the other.
- TSI crossing above its own signal line is a commonly watched bullish momentum signal, similar in structure to a MACD crossover.
