Whale

A term for an individual or entity holding a very large amount of a given asset.

A whale is an informal term for an individual or entity that holds a very large amount of a given cryptocurrency relative to its overall supply, or relative to typical holders.

Because of the size of their holdings, whale activity, such as moving or trading large amounts, is sometimes watched by others as one data point among many, though it doesn't reliably predict future price movements on its own.

Examples

  • A wallet holding an unusually large share of a token's total supply might be referred to as a whale.
  • Whale movements are sometimes discussed in market commentary, though they're just one of many data points.
