Yield-Bearing Stablecoin
A stablecoin that automatically passes a portion of its reserve income, such as interest earned on underlying government bonds, directly to holders, rather than keeping that yield as issuer profit.
A yield-bearing stablecoin is a stablecoin design that automatically passes a portion of the yield its reserves generate — commonly interest earned on the government bonds or other instruments backing a fiat-collateralized stablecoin (see Kaavon's "Fiat-Collateralized Stablecoin" glossary definition) — directly to the stablecoin's holders, typically through a steadily increasing token balance or exchange rate, rather than the issuer retaining that yield entirely as its own profit the way most traditional stablecoins do.
This design has grown more prominent as interest rates on the traditional, low-risk government bonds commonly backing fiat-collateralized stablecoins have made that underlying yield more meaningful, and because passing yield through to holders directly can make a stablecoin more competitive as a straightforward, real yield (see Kaavon's "Real Yield" glossary definition) -generating savings instrument rather than just a non-yielding payment and settlement asset. Regulatory treatment of yield-bearing stablecoins varies by jurisdiction, and some regulatory frameworks treat a stablecoin that pays yield directly to holders meaningfully differently, including as a potential security, compared to a standard non-yield-bearing stablecoin.
