Introduction to On-Chain Analysis
What on-chain analysis is, why it's possible, and what kinds of questions it can help answer.

What to remember
- On-chain analysis studies a blockchain's own public transaction data directly.
- This is possible because public blockchains record their history openly.
- It can help answer questions about network activity, exchange flows, and holder concentration.
- It generally can't directly reveal an address's real-world identity or intent on its own.
What on-chain analysis is
On-chain analysis studies a public blockchain's own recorded transaction and account data directly, rather than relying solely on self-reported figures from any single company or platform, to understand real network activity.
Why this is possible at all
Public blockchains record their transaction history openly, which lets anyone with the right tools independently verify and analyze that data — a genuinely different kind of transparency than most traditional financial systems offer by default.
What kinds of questions it can help answer
- How many distinct addresses are actively transacting on a network over a given period.
- How value is flowing into or out of exchange addresses.
- How concentrated or distributed a token's holder base actually is.
On-chain data doesn't automatically reveal intent or identity
On-chain analysis can show what happened on the ledger, but generally can't directly reveal who controls a given address or why a specific transaction occurred, without additional, separate information.
