How to Evaluate a Crypto Project Before Investing
A practical, general framework for researching a project rather than relying on hype alone.
Jump to section
What to remember
- Read a project's own documentation to understand what it actually does.
- Check the team's identifiability, track record, and evidence of real ongoing development.
- Review tokenomics: issuance, supply concentration, vesting, and genuine token utility.
- Evaluate substance separately from recent price momentum.
Understand what the project actually does
Start by reading the project's own documentation (often a whitepaper) to understand, in concrete terms, what problem it claims to solve and how its technology actually works — not just its marketing summary.
Check the team and track record
- Is the team publicly identifiable, with a verifiable professional background?
- Has the team shipped real, working products before, or is this their first attempt?
- Is there evidence of active, ongoing development, such as a public code repository with real recent activity?
Review the token's real economics
- How are new tokens issued over time, and what is the maximum or circulating supply?
- How much of the supply is held by the team or early investors, and under what vesting schedule?
- Does the token have a genuine, specific use within the project, or does its stated purpose feel vague or unnecessary to the project's function?
Price momentum is not project research
A rising price can reflect genuine adoption, but it can equally reflect speculation, marketing, or manipulation. Evaluating a project on its actual substance, separate from recent price action, produces a much more reliable picture.
