Key takeaways

What to remember

  • Asset diversification, time diversification, and platform diversification address different risks.
  • Spreading purchases across time reduces single-point-in-time timing risk.
  • Using more than one platform reduces counterparty/platform risk specifically.
  • No single diversification technique addresses every kind of risk at once.

Diversifying across assets

Spreading exposure across multiple, meaningfully different assets can reduce the impact of any single asset performing poorly — though this benefit depends on how differently those assets actually tend to behave, not just how many are held. Correlation can also rise sharply during broad market downturns: many crypto assets have historically tended to fall together during sharp, sentiment-driven declines, reducing diversification's protective effect exactly when it might matter most.

Diversifying across time

Spreading purchases or sales across time (rather than acting all at once) reduces exposure to the risk of a single, poorly-timed entry or exit point — a distinct kind of risk from which specific assets are held.

Diversifying across platforms

  • Holding funds across more than one exchange or wallet reduces the impact if any single platform is compromised, restricted, or becomes unavailable.
  • This addresses a different, genuinely distinct kind of risk — counterparty and platform risk — from asset-price risk.
Why it matters

These are three genuinely different kinds of risk

Asset-price risk, timing risk, and platform/counterparty risk are managed by different techniques — diversifying only across assets, for example, does nothing to reduce the risk of a single exchange being compromised.
