Seed Phrase Security Best Practices
Practical habits for storing and protecting a wallet seed phrase, and mistakes that put funds at real risk.

What to remember
- A seed phrase can recreate full wallet access — treat it as the real key to your funds.
- Never store it digitally in any form, including photos or cloud storage.
- Keep a durable, secure, offline physical backup.
- Never share it with anyone, regardless of how the request is framed.
Why the seed phrase is the actual key
A seed phrase is a sequence of words that can recreate a wallet's private keys and full access to its funds. Anyone who obtains it can access those funds — it functions as the real, ultimate key, regardless of any password protecting the wallet app itself.
Keep it offline, always
A seed phrase should never be typed into a computer, stored in a text file, emailed, photographed, or stored in cloud storage. Any digital copy creates a real opportunity for it to be stolen remotely.
A durable physical backup
- Write it on paper, or use a more durable medium designed to survive fire or water damage.
- Store the backup somewhere secure and, ideally, separate from the device it protects.
- Consider a second backup location for redundancy, kept equally secure.
Never share it, under any circumstance
There is no legitimate reason to ever share a seed phrase
No wallet provider, exchange, or support team will ever legitimately need your seed phrase. A request for it, however it's framed, is always an attempt to steal your funds.
Plan for the unexpected
Consider how a trusted person could access funds if something happened to you, balanced carefully against the risk of exposing the seed phrase to more people than necessary. This is a real, practical trade-off worth thinking through in advance.
