Project Overview
1inch is a DEX aggregation protocol, launched in 2019, that searches across many individual decentralized exchanges and liquidity sources to try to find a better overall execution price for a given trade than any single exchange alone might offer. Its current flagship swap engine, Fusion, reframes aggregation as an intent-based, Dutch-auction system rather than simple direct routing.
Technology & Architecture
Per 1inch's own documentation, placing a Fusion order makes a user the 'maker'; third-party 'resolvers' then 'compete to fill your order and also pay for any associated gas fees.' Competition runs as a Dutch auction in which 'the rate starts high and moves lower' until a resolver fills the order, the price crosses the user's slippage tolerance, or the order expires -- at which point it can be resubmitted 'at no additional cost.' 1inch states Fusion provides 'No cost for failed transactions' and lets users 'swap without using native assets' for gas, since resolvers cover gas themselves (partly offset by a 1inch gas-refund program). Partial and multiple fills are supported unless a maker disables them. A resolver's maximum allowed priority fee is capped by smart contract as a percentage of baseFee (70% below 10.6 gwei, 50% between 10.6-104.1 gwei, 65% above), with escalating penalties -- from a warning up to a 365-day filling ban -- for violations.
To become a resolver, 1inch requires staking enough 1INCH to hold at least 5% of total 'Unicorn Power' (UP), with a maximum of 10 listed resolvers at a time. 1inch's Aqua shared-liquidity protocol reportedly opened for full public use in early 2026, and a proposal (1IP-89) was reportedly introduced to remove the UP threshold gating resolver access to Fusion order flow -- disclosed as reported, not confirmed passed as of this research.
An aggregator inherits the risks of what it routes through
1inch's own execution quality and safety are partly dependent on the underlying exchanges and liquidity sources it routes a trade through -- using an aggregator doesn't remove the risks of the venues behind it, it inherits them.
Token Utility & Economics
The 1INCH token grants holders governance rights over the protocol's parameters and development direction. Staking 1INCH produces st1INCH and Unicorn Power, with a default 2-year lock and an early-unstaking penalty. How protocol revenue flows back to 1INCH holders is disputed in 2026 reporting: one source describes the token as capturing value only through DAO governance rights over parameters and incentive allocation (not direct fee capture), while another states stakers also earn a share of protocol fee revenue; a third review calls the flow of value from protocol revenue to token holders 'indirect and opaque.' This profile could not resolve that disagreement from the sources read and discloses it rather than picking a side.
Governance
1INCH holders vote on 1inch Improvement Proposals (1IPs) that set protocol parameters and incentive allocation, with voting weight tied to staked Unicorn Power. A 2026 governance dispute, sourced to a single screener page and not independently confirmed elsewhere, alleges the DAO functions mainly as a 'decentralization front' -- receiving token allocations rather than a meaningful share of the protocol's roughly $5.3M in reported annual revenue.
Ecosystem & Adoption
1inch is widely referenced as one of the earliest and most significant DEX aggregators. Q1 2026 data reported by TokenPost shows average daily aggregation-protocol transactions fell 58.9% quarter-over-quarter to about 54,500, even as Limit Order Protocol volume on BNB Chain rose over the same period. Cumulative lifetime volume figures conflict sharply across sources -- one cites roughly $253.3B, another says over $700B, and a third claims over $1 trillion -- disclosed here as an unreconciled discrepancy rather than a single verified number.
Competitive Landscape
1inch competes with other DEX aggregators (such as Matcha and Paraswap) and increasingly with routing features built directly into individual exchanges' own interfaces, which reduces the structural advantage a standalone aggregator can offer as more venues internalize smart order routing.
Security & Decentralization
As an aggregator, 1inch's execution quality and safety are partly dependent on the underlying exchanges and liquidity sources it routes through, inheriting some of their risks. Fusion's resolver model adds a further dependency: execution quality depends on a capped pool of at most 10 staked, approved resolvers competing in each Dutch auction, rather than on 1inch's own infrastructure alone.
Risks & Dependencies
- As an aggregator, 1inch's execution quality and safety are partly dependent on the underlying exchanges and liquidity sources it routes through, inheriting some of their risks.
- Aggregation and Fusion routing logic is itself smart-contract code, carrying the same general exploit risk present across DeFi protocols.
- Resolver concentration: Fusion caps the number of listed resolvers at 10, concentrating execution among a small, staked set of participants.
- Value-accrual opacity: sources disagree on whether and how much protocol fee revenue flows to 1INCH holders beyond governance rights.
- 1inch competes with other DEX aggregators and with routing features increasingly built directly into individual exchanges' own interfaces.

How this profile is maintained
Researched directly from 1inch's own Fusion support documentation (help.1inch.com) for swap-execution mechanics, cross-checked against 2026 secondary reporting (TokenPost Q1 2026 data, Blockworks token-transparency filing, a Goverland governance-proposal listing) for volume and governance figures, which conflict with each other on cumulative volume -- disclosed explicitly rather than reconciled.
