About this data

Prices and market data are Powered by CoinGecko, aggregated across the exchanges CoinGecko tracks — not the execution price of any single exchange. Kaavon attempts to refresh this data every 10 minutes; last refreshed 5:51 PM UTC.

Market cap uses circulating supply; fully diluted valuation (FDV) projects the market cap as if the maximum supply were already in circulation today — it is a valuation reference point, not a prediction of future market cap.

Project Overview

Cardano is a public, proof-of-stake blockchain platform, launched in 2017, that supports smart contracts and programmable applications. From its initial design the project emphasized academic research and formal, peer-reviewed methods as part of how protocol changes are designed and evaluated -- a development philosophy the project treats as a distinguishing part of its identity, developed principally by Input Output (IOG) alongside the Cardano Foundation and EMURGO.

In practice

Rigor and speed are a documented trade-off here

Cardano's formally-verified, research-driven methodology has historically meant slower feature delivery compared to some competing platforms -- a real trade-off of that approach, not a flaw in it, and worth weighing against how quickly a project needs to ship changes.

Technology & Architecture

Cardano uses a proof-of-stake protocol called Ouroboros. Validators, referred to as stake pool operators (SPOs), are selected to produce blocks based on the network's staking rules, and ADA holders can delegate their stake to a pool without giving up custody of their own tokens. Cardano's architecture separates the settlement of transactions (the Cardano Settlement Layer) from the computation layer that runs smart contracts, a design choice the project describes as intended to support flexibility and easier future upgrades.

The project's current scaling research effort is Ouroboros Leios, a proposed redesign intended to substantially increase throughput by separating transaction ordering from the heavier work of block diffusion and validation. Preliminary simulation figures (reported by secondary sources, not yet an audited mainnet result) describe throughput gains in a wide 10x-to-65x range depending on configuration -- a real, but still experimental and unconfirmed, roadmap item rather than a shipped capability.

Token Utility & Economics

ADA is Cardano's native asset, used to pay transaction fees, participate in staking, and interact with applications built on the network. As of epoch 665 (closing 2026-10-31), Cardano's own live supply dashboard reports circulating supply at approximately 36.82 billion ADA (81.83% of max supply), total supply (circulation plus unclaimed rewards, deposits, and treasury) at approximately 38.97 billion ADA, and reserves -- the unissued difference between total and maximum supply -- at approximately 6.03 billion ADA. ADA's protocol-defined maximum supply is a fixed 45 billion tokens; reserves are released gradually as staking rewards under the Ouroboros reward-calculation rules.

Staking is liquid on Cardano: delegated ADA has no lock-up or unbonding period, and holders can move or redelegate it at any time, though earned rewards are subject to a short activation delay before they become spendable. There is currently no token-burn or buyback mechanism for ADA.

Governance

Cardano's on-chain governance framework, known as Voltaire and defined by CIP-1694, was enacted through the Chang hard fork in September 2024. It introduced a three-body structure: ADA holders who register as Delegated Representatives (DReps) vote on governance actions, stake pool operators retain a voting role, and a Constitutional Committee checks proposed actions against Cardano's constitution across seven defined categories of governance action.

The Cardano treasury is funded from a share of each epoch's staking rewards and transaction fees rather than a separate tax; in epoch 665, roughly 36.9% of that epoch's overall staking rewards were allocated to the treasury, growing the treasury pot to approximately 1.39 billion ADA. Treasury withdrawals require a successful on-chain governance action; none occurred in epoch 665.

Common mistake

DRep turnout data should be checked against a live dashboard, not a blog post

Several secondary blogs published specific 2026 DRep-turnout and treasury-spend figures (e.g. a named May 2026 deadline and a named dollar amount of approved spending) that could not be verified against an official Cardano or Intersect source during this research pass. Treat any such figure as provisional until confirmed on a live governance dashboard (e.g. Intersect's own reporting or a block-explorer-linked governance tracker).

Ecosystem & Adoption

Cardano supports smart contracts, native tokens, and decentralized applications built using its own development tools and programming languages (notably Plutus and Aiken), separate from the general properties of the base settlement layer itself. Project Catalyst, Cardano's community treasury-funded grants program, has been a recurring mechanism for ecosystem growth, framed by IOG as part of the broader transition toward Voltaire-era self-governance.

Competitive Landscape

Cardano competes most directly with other proof-of-stake smart-contract platforms, particularly Ethereum and Solana. Relative to both, Cardano's formally-verified, peer-reviewed development process has historically traded delivery speed for methodological rigor -- a real, documented trade-off rather than a simple deficiency, but one that has coincided with smart-contract ecosystem usage metrics (active dApps, TVL) lagging both competitors by most public trackers' measures. Cardano's liquid, no-lockup staking model is comparable to Ethereum's but differs from systems that impose unbonding delays.

Security & Decentralization

Ouroboros is a provably-secure proof-of-stake protocol in the academic sense -- its security properties were formally analyzed and published in peer-reviewed cryptography research prior to the network's design, which the project treats as a core differentiator from proof-of-stake systems designed and deployed without an equivalent formal security proof. Stake pool decentralization is influenced by the protocol's "k" parameter, which caps the rewards any single pool can earn past a saturation point, intended to discourage excessive stake concentration in any one operator. This research pass did not identify a material protocol-level security incident specific to the Cardano base layer; disclosed honestly as a gap rather than an implied clean record, since a negative search result is not proof of absence.

Risks & Dependencies

  • Cardano's research-driven, formally-verified development approach has historically meant slower feature delivery compared to some competing platforms — a documented trade-off of that methodology, not a flaw in it.
  • Smart contract ecosystem activity on Cardano has, by various usage metrics, lagged some competing smart-contract platforms, a gap the project's Voltaire governance transition and Leios scaling research aim to help close but have not yet closed as of this research pass.
  • Voltaire-era on-chain governance is still young (enacted September 2024); DRep participation rates and the treasury's long-term funding/spending balance are actively evolving and reported inconsistently across secondary sources, making current governance-health claims harder to verify than the protocol's supply mechanics.
  • Cardano competes with numerous other proof-of-stake smart-contract platforms for developer and user adoption.

How this profile is maintained

Manually maintained research profile. Supply, treasury, and reserve figures were read directly from Cardano's own live supply dashboard (epoch 665, closing 2026-10-31). Governance structure is drawn from a July 2026 academic technical report on Cardano's Voltaire governance system and the Cardano Foundation's own governance-history page; 2026 referenda/treasury activity levels reported by secondary blogs could not be independently confirmed and are flagged as such. No live market-price data is used.
