About this data

Prices and market data are Powered by CoinGecko, aggregated across the exchanges CoinGecko tracks — not the execution price of any single exchange. Kaavon attempts to refresh this data every 10 minutes; last refreshed 11:29 PM UTC.

Market cap uses circulating supply; fully diluted valuation (FDV) projects the market cap as if the maximum supply were already in circulation today — it is a valuation reference point, not a prediction of future market cap.

Project Overview

Optimism (OP Mainnet) is a Layer 2 network built on Ethereum, launched in 2021, using optimistic-rollup technology. It is governed by the Optimism Collective, a structure combining token-holder voting (the Token House) with a Citizens' House concept oriented toward public-goods funding -- a distinctive governance design compared to most other rollups.

Technology & Architecture

Optimism publishes its core rollup technology as an open standard, the OP Stack, which other teams can deploy to launch their own Layer 2 chains sharing underlying design and, for chains that opt in, interoperability benefits -- collectively called the Superchain. As of reporting from around April 2026, a dozen production chains had launched on the OP Stack, including World Chain, Zora, Mode, and Unichain; however, Coinbase announced in February 2026 that it would migrate Base, historically the largest Superchain member by activity, off the OP Stack -- a concrete signal that "shared codebase" does not guarantee a permanent commitment to the Superchain's governance umbrella.

Why it matters

Shared code means a shared blast radius

Because multiple Superchain chains run the same underlying OP Stack code, a serious flaw discovered in that shared codebase is a risk that could extend across every chain built on it, not just OP Mainnet itself -- a real consequence of the code-sharing benefits, not just an upside. Base's 2026 departure from the OP Stack also shows that shared technology does not equal a permanent governance or security union.

Token Utility & Economics

OP grants holders governance rights within the Optimism Collective's Token House, including voting on protocol upgrades and on public-goods funding allocation. In January 2026, Optimism governance approved (reportedly by an 84.4% vote) a pilot program directing 50% of incoming Superchain sequencer revenue toward monthly OP token buybacks over a 12-month period -- a direct, measurable link between network usage and token-level economics that most governance tokens do not have.

Governance

Protocol upgrades are proposed through Token House governance and executed by a Security Council. Optimism's own description states the Council has 13 voting members plus one non-voting Lead, operating a multisig requiring roughly a 75% signing threshold, with members serving staggered 12-month terms. L2Beat independently reports that the SuperchainProxyAdmin -- the contract controlling critical upgrades -- is held by a 2-of-2 multisig of the Optimism Foundation and the Security Council, with a 7-day veto window for regular upgrades but no delay on emergency upgrades, which can execute instantly with no notice.

Ecosystem & Adoption

OP Mainnet's own L2Beat-measured Total Value Secured was approximately $1.52 billion as of this profile's 2026-11-04 read (down 11.0% over the prior 7 days), with "other" assets (35.3%), ETH and derivatives (34.0%), and stablecoins (26.6%) as the largest components; the OP token itself made up about 16.1% of TVS. This figure measures OP Mainnet alone, not the combined Superchain -- at least one secondary source cited a combined OP Stack ecosystem figure above $18 billion, illustrating that "Optimism's TVL" is ambiguous unless the scope (one chain vs. the whole Superchain) is specified.

Competitive Landscape

Optimism's most direct competitor is Arbitrum, which uses a single-chain-plus-Orbit-chains model rather than Optimism's many-chains-one-codebase Superchain approach; L2Beat classifies both as Stage 1 Optimistic Rollups with broadly comparable fraud-proof designs. Coinbase's Base, despite leaving the OP Stack's governance structure in 2026, remains a reminder that Optimism's technology and its governance umbrella are now separable. Validity-proof rollups (zkSync, Starknet) offer faster cryptographic finality as a structurally different trade-off against Optimism's challenge-window model.

Security & Decentralization

L2Beat classifies OP Mainnet as a Stage 1 Optimistic Rollup, blocked from Stage 2 by the same two issue categories as Arbitrum: upgrades unrelated to a provable bug give less than the required 30-day exit window, and Security Council actions aren't strictly confined to responding to onchain-provable bugs. Sequencer failure is mitigated by force-inclusion via Ethereum L1 within a 12-hour delay; the fraud-proof challenge period plus execution delay is roughly 3 days 12 hours each (about 7 days total) according to L2Beat. L2Beat records a 2024-08-16 incident in which the system fell back to permissioned proposals for 26 days -- a real episode worth noting even though it predates this profile's current review window.

Risks & Dependencies

  • Emergency upgrades carry no user exit window -- the Security Council and Optimism Foundation's 2-of-2 multisig can act instantly, a named gap in L2Beat's own Stage 2 criteria.
  • Base's 2026 departure from the OP Stack demonstrates that Superchain membership is not a durable commitment -- other major chains could follow, reducing the scale benefits the Superchain thesis depends on.
  • A serious vulnerability in the shared OP Stack codebase is a risk that could, in principle, affect every chain built on it simultaneously, not just OP Mainnet.
  • "Optimism TVL" figures vary by an order of magnitude depending on whether they measure OP Mainnet alone or the full Superchain -- a real sourcing/scope risk for anyone comparing Optimism to single-chain competitors.
  • Optimism competes directly with Arbitrum and with validity-proof rollups for the same developer and liquidity base.
