About this data

Prices and market data are Powered by CoinGecko, aggregated across the exchanges CoinGecko tracks — not the execution price of any single exchange. Kaavon attempts to refresh this data every 10 minutes; last refreshed 10:12 AM UTC.

Market cap uses circulating supply; fully diluted valuation (FDV) projects the market cap as if the maximum supply were already in circulation today — it is a valuation reference point, not a prediction of future market cap.

Project Overview

Solana is a public, permissionless Layer 1 blockchain launched in 2020, designed to process ordered transactions at high throughput across a distributed network of validators while keeping the base layer responsible for both execution and settlement. Its runtime uses accounts to hold state and programs to define application behavior.

Technology & Architecture

Solana uses proof of stake for consensus: validators run the network software, vote on and produce blocks, and help verify and replicate ledger data, with their role governed by stake-weighted consensus rules. Proof of History, a cryptographic clock providing a verifiable ordering and passage-of-time signal for events, reduces the coordination work needed to establish when events occurred — but it does not replace validator consensus; network agreement still depends on the proof-of-stake voting process. Solana's architecture and client software continue to evolve: Alpenglow, a new consensus-protocol upgrade, passed a 2026 governance vote, and SIMD-0525, a proposal to halve slot time, was merged into the Agave validator client in mid-2026 pending separate mainnet-activation governance.

Token Utility & Economics

SOL is Solana's native asset, used in the network's fee and account systems and required for validator staking under the protocol's rules. Beyond transaction fees, SOL's issuance (inflation) rate itself is a live governance question: SIMD-228, a 2025 proposal to make inflation market-based, drew record participation (74% of staked supply across 910 validators) but failed to pass, and as of 2026 two related proposals — SIMD-0550 (doubling the disinflation rate) and SIMD-0547 (burning base fees) — remained active and under discussion rather than decided.

Governance

Solana's protocol changes are proposed through Solana Improvement Documents (SIMDs) and generally require a governance vote among staked validators before mainnet activation — a formal on-chain voting process genuinely distinct from Bitcoin's or Ethereum's informal, offchain governance. In practice, however, the Solana Foundation and larger validators have at times pushed to expedite activation (reported in connection with SIMD-0525) in ways some observers characterize as bypassing the stakeholder vote that failed SIMD proposals like SIMD-228 otherwise require — a real, disclosed tension between formal on-chain voting and informal operator influence that this profile does not resolve either way.

Ecosystem & Adoption

Solana supports applications built with its account model and on-chain programs, including payments, exchanges, games, collectibles, and DeFi protocols such as Kamino. Reported DeFi TVL figures disagreed significantly across 2026 sources — from roughly $5 billion to over $14 billion depending on the source and month — with most sources agreeing TVL had declined from a 2025 peak before partially recovering later in 2026; this profile does not adopt any single one of these figures as authoritative.

In practice

Check for documented network history before assuming uptime

Solana has experienced documented network outages and periods of degraded performance historically -- a real operational consideration for anyone building on or relying on the network, separate from evaluating its design goals or long-term direction.

Competitive Landscape

Solana is most often compared to Ethereum (which prioritizes validator decentralization and a mature, backward-compatible tooling ecosystem over raw throughput) and to other high-performance Layer 1 networks such as Aptos and Sui, which pursue similar low-latency, high-throughput goals through different parallel-execution designs rather than Solana's Proof of History model.

Security & Decentralization

Validator decentralization is a documented, worsening concern by several 2026 measures: reported daily validator counts fell from roughly 2,560 in 2023 to approximately 770–795 by March 2026 (sources differ on the exact figure), and one source reported the network's Nakamoto coefficient — a measure of how few entities would need to collude to disrupt consensus — fell roughly 35% over the same period, to about 20. The Solana Foundation introduced rules effective May 1, 2026 restricting the number of validator nodes per ASN and data center, explicitly aimed at this decentralization concern; whether this reverses the validator-count trend had not yet been independently confirmed as of the sources checked.

Risks & Dependencies

  • Solana has experienced documented network outages and periods of degraded performance historically, a real operational consideration distinct from its design goals.
  • Running a validator involves higher hardware requirements than some other proof-of-stake networks, a trade-off for performance that affects how broadly validator participation can realistically scale.
  • Solana competes with numerous other high-throughput Layer 1 networks pursuing similar performance goals through different technical approaches.
  • Validator count and the Nakamoto coefficient have both reportedly declined significantly through 2026 — a real, actively monitored decentralization risk the Foundation's May 2026 rule changes were explicitly designed to address.
  • Governance proposals that affect node-operator economics (e.g., slot-time changes, inflation-rate proposals) have reportedly faced tension between the formal on-chain vote process and informal Foundation/large-validator influence over activation timing.

How this profile is maintained

Research-grade profile built on official Solana documentation plus WebSearch-sourced, dated figures on the SIMD governance process, validator-count decline, and DeFi TVL. Every figure that disagreed across sources (validator count, Nakamoto coefficient, TVL) is disclosed as a range with its reporting source rather than presented as one precise, unverified number.
