Inflation-Adjusted Return Calculator
Adjust a nominal return for an inflation rate you enter to estimate real, purchasing-power-adjusted return.
What this tool does
Adjusts a nominal return for an inflation rate you enter to estimate a real, purchasing-power-adjusted return.
Assumptions
Results use only the values you enter. They are estimates for education and planning, not investment advice or live market data.
How it's calculated
- Real return (%) = ((1 + nominal return ÷ 100) ÷ (1 + inflation ÷ 100) − 1) × 100
Worked example
- Nominal return: 10%
- Inflation: 3%
Result: Real return 6.8%
Computed with this calculator's own formula.
How to read the result
The real return is the growth in purchasing power after inflation. It is slightly lower than simply subtracting inflation from the nominal return (10% − 3% = 7%), because inflation also erodes the gains themselves.
Limitations
- It uses a single inflation rate you enter; your personal inflation rate may differ from an official index.
- Taxes and fees are not included.
