1-of-1 Art
An NFT representing a single, unique piece of art with no other identical copies, as distinct from a generative collection made up of many algorithmically varied pieces.
1-of-1 art refers to an NFT representing a single, unique artwork with no other identical or near-identical copies minted, as opposed to a generative art (see Kaavon's "Generative Art" glossary definition) collection or a PFP collection (see Kaavon's "PFP Collection" glossary definition), both of which consist of many separate pieces built from shared templates or algorithmic variation. A 1-of-1 piece is typically created and valued more like a traditional individual artwork, with the artist's specific reputation and the piece's own particular qualities driving its value, rather than its relative rarity within a larger set.
Because a 1-of-1 piece has no comparable sibling pieces within the same collection, valuing it is generally closer to valuing traditional fine art — relying on the artist's track record, critical or community reception, and the specific work's individual characteristics — than to the trait rarity (see Kaavon's "Trait Rarity" glossary definition) and floor-price-based valuation methods commonly used for large generative or PFP collections with many comparable pieces.
Examples
- A 1-of-1 art piece by a well-known digital artist is valued based on factors like the artist's reputation and the specific work's individual merit, rather than its rarity relative to sibling pieces.
- Unlike a PFP collection with thousands of algorithmically varied pieces, a 1-of-1 artwork has no comparable sibling NFTs to benchmark its value against.
