Utility NFT
An NFT whose primary value comes from functional benefits it grants the holder, such as access, membership, or in-app features, rather than purely from its artwork or collectibility.
A utility NFT is an NFT whose primary value proposition comes from specific functional benefits granted to its holder — such as access to a community, event, or product; a membership status; in-game items or abilities; or a claim on some future service — rather than from the artwork's aesthetic or collectible appeal alone, which is the primary draw for a 1-of-1 art (see Kaavon's "1-of-1 Art" glossary definition) piece or many PFP collections (see Kaavon's "PFP Collection" glossary definition).
In practice, many NFT collections blend both utility and collectibility to varying degrees, rather than falling neatly into one category or the other, so the distinction is often a matter of emphasis rather than a strict either-or classification. Evaluating a utility NFT's actual value requires scrutinizing whether the promised utility is already delivered and functioning, rather than merely promised for an uncertain future date, since utility NFTs have sometimes traded heavily on the expectation of a future feature that was later delayed, scaled back, or never delivered at all.
Examples
- A utility NFT granting access to a members-only community or event derives its value primarily from that functional benefit, rather than from the artwork's standalone aesthetic appeal.
- A utility NFT trading heavily on the promise of a future feature carries meaningfully more risk than one whose utility is already live and functioning as advertised.
