Arweave
A decentralized storage network designed for permanent data storage, where a single upfront payment is intended to fund storage indefinitely.
Arweave is a decentralized storage network built around the concept of "permanent" data storage: rather than paying an ongoing, recurring fee the way most cloud storage works, users pay once upfront, and that payment is intended to fund an endowment that compensates storage providers ("miners," in Arweave's terminology) to keep the data available indefinitely. Data is replicated across the network and incentivized through Arweave's own blockchain and token.
Arweave is often contrasted with IPFS (see Kaavon's "IPFS (InterPlanetary File System)" glossary definition): IPFS is primarily an addressing and retrieval protocol that doesn't itself guarantee any file stays stored unless a node actively chooses to pin it, while Arweave bundles storage incentives directly into its core design specifically to target long-term persistence. This makes Arweave a common choice for data that genuinely needs to remain available for a very long time, such as NFT metadata, historical records, or permanent application front ends, though its permanence guarantee ultimately depends on the long-run viability of its storage-incentive model.
Examples
- An NFT project might choose Arweave over standard IPFS specifically to rely on its built-in, paid-for permanence guarantee rather than depending on volunteer pinning.
- Arweave's one-time payment model is designed to fund indefinite storage, in contrast to the ongoing, recurring costs typical of centralized cloud storage.
