Fully On-Chain NFT
An NFT whose entire image or media data is stored directly on the blockchain itself, rather than referencing an external file through a link or hash.
A fully on-chain NFT stores its complete image or media data directly within the blockchain itself — often generated programmatically from code also stored on-chain, such as an SVG image built entirely from on-chain data — rather than storing only a pointer, such as an IPFS hash (see Kaavon's "IPFS (InterPlanetary File System)" glossary definition) or a centralized URL, that references an external file living somewhere off-chain. This means the NFT's actual visual content can be reconstructed purely from the blockchain's own data, with no dependency on any external storage system remaining available.
The tradeoff for this stronger permanence guarantee is cost and complexity: storing substantial image data directly on-chain is far more gas-expensive than storing a small hash pointing elsewhere, which is why fully on-chain NFTs are typically limited to simpler, often algorithmically generated visuals rather than large, complex image files. Fully on-chain NFTs represent one end of a spectrum of permanence tradeoffs, with IPFS-referenced NFTs in the middle and centralized-URL-referenced NFTs — dependent entirely on one company's server staying online — at the other, least durable end.
Examples
- A fully on-chain NFT collection might generate each image as an SVG built entirely from on-chain code and data, so the artwork can always be reconstructed directly from the blockchain.
- Fully on-chain NFTs are typically limited to simpler, algorithmically generated visuals, since storing large, complex image files directly on-chain would be prohibitively expensive in gas costs.
