DAO Treasury

The pool of assets a decentralized autonomous organization collectively owns and controls through its governance process, used to fund operations, grants, and strategic initiatives.

A DAO treasury is the pool of assets — commonly including the DAO's own native token, stablecoins, and other cryptocurrencies — that a decentralized autonomous organization collectively owns and controls through its governance process, typically held in a multi-signature wallet (see Kaavon's "Multi-Signature Wallet" glossary definition) or governed smart contract rather than by any single individual. Treasury funds are generally used to pay for ongoing operational costs, fund grants or contributor compensation, and support strategic initiatives the community votes to pursue.

Many DAO treasuries hold a large share of their own native governance token, which creates a notable valuation and liquidity complication — a treasury's total reported value can look substantial on paper while being heavily concentrated in an asset the DAO itself issues and that may not be easily sellable in size without significantly moving its own price. This is part of why treasury diversification (see Kaavon's "Treasury Diversification" glossary definition) into more stable, liquid assets is a frequent subject of debate in DAO governance circles, distinct from the broader concept of protocol-controlled value (see Kaavon's "Protocol-Controlled Value (PCV)" glossary definition), which specifically refers to assets a protocol deploys as owned liquidity rather than simply holding in a treasury.

Examples

  • A DAO treasury's reported total value can be misleading if a large share consists of the DAO's own native token, which may not be easily sellable in size without affecting its own price.
  • A DAO's governance process might vote to approve a treasury grant funding a specific development initiative, drawing from the pool of assets the DAO collectively controls.
