Treasury Diversification
The strategy of converting a portion of a DAO treasury's concentrated native-token holdings into a broader mix of stable, liquid assets to reduce dependence on a single volatile token's price.
Treasury diversification is a strategy, commonly pursued by DAOs and crypto projects, of converting a portion of a DAO treasury's (see Kaavon's "DAO Treasury" glossary definition) holdings — which are often heavily concentrated in the organization's own native governance token — into a broader mix of other assets, such as stablecoins, major cryptocurrencies, or traditional financial instruments, specifically to reduce the treasury's dependence on a single volatile token's price for its ability to fund ongoing operations.
Without diversification, a treasury that's heavily weighted toward its own native token faces a reflexive risk: if that token's price falls sharply, the treasury's real purchasing power to fund grants, contributor compensation, and operations falls right along with it, potentially at the exact moment the organization most needs stable funding to weather a difficult period. The tradeoff diversification proposals must navigate is that selling a large amount of the native token to diversify can itself put downward price pressure on that same token, requiring careful execution, such as gradual sales over time, to avoid the diversification effort becoming self-defeating.
