Flippening
A hypothetical future event in which Ethereum's market capitalization surpasses Bitcoin's, making it the largest cryptocurrency by that measure.
The "flippening" refers to a hypothetical future scenario in which Ethereum's market capitalization (see Kaavon's "Market Cap" glossary definition) surpasses Bitcoin's, making Ethereum the largest cryptocurrency by that specific measure. The term has circulated in crypto discourse for years as a speculative talking point about Ethereum's long-term growth potential relative to Bitcoin, without the event actually having occurred as of this writing.
Discussion of the flippening often centers on comparing the two networks' fundamentally different value propositions — Bitcoin's narrative emphasizes monetary scarcity and store-of-value characteristics, while Ethereum's emphasizes smart contract platform utility and broader on-chain economic activity — making the comparison as much a debate about which narrative will attract more capital over time as a purely technical or financial prediction. The term is now sometimes also used more loosely to describe any similar market-cap-surpassing event between other specific pairs of cryptocurrencies, not only Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Examples
- Proponents of a potential flippening often point to Ethereum's broader smart contract utility as a reason its market cap could eventually surpass Bitcoin's.
- The term flippening is sometimes used more loosely today to describe a market-cap-surpassing event between other specific cryptocurrency pairs, not just Bitcoin and Ethereum.
