Validator Activation Queue
A waiting line that limits how many new validators can join a Proof-of-Stake network's active validator set at the same time, to protect network stability.
A validator activation queue is a waiting line, built into several Proof-of-Stake networks' protocol rules, that limits how many new validators can join the active validator set within a given period — the entry-side counterpart to the validator exit queue (see Kaavon's "Validator Exit Queue" glossary definition).
During periods of unusually high demand to become a validator, the activation queue can meaningfully delay how long it takes a newly-staked validator to actually begin earning rewards and participating in consensus.
Examples
- A surge in new validators wanting to join at the same time can extend the activation queue, delaying how long it takes to begin earning rewards.
- The validator activation queue is the entry-side counterpart to the exit queue, both existing to protect network stability from sudden validator-set changes.
