Validator Exit Queue
A waiting line that limits how many validators can exit a Proof-of-Stake network's active validator set at the same time, to protect network stability.
A validator exit queue is a waiting line, built into several Proof-of-Stake networks' protocol rules, that limits how many validators can exit the active validator set within a given period, specifically to protect network security and stability from too many validators withdrawing at once.
During periods of unusually high exit demand, the queue can meaningfully extend how long it actually takes a validator to withdraw, beyond the base unbonding period (see Kaavon's "Unbonding" glossary definition) itself.
Examples
- A surge in validators wanting to exit at the same time can extend the validator exit queue well beyond the network's base unbonding period.
- The validator exit queue exists specifically to prevent a sudden mass withdrawal of validators from destabilizing the network's security.
