Withdrawal Credential
A field in an Ethereum validator's record specifying the address where its staked ETH and accumulated rewards can eventually be withdrawn to.
A withdrawal credential is a field set when an Ethereum validator is created, specifying the destination address authorized to eventually receive that validator's staked ETH principal and any accumulated staking rewards. Early in Ethereum's proof-of-stake rollout, validators could only set a credential type that committed to a future address without yet enabling automatic withdrawals; a later credential type enables both automatic reward sweeps and full principal withdrawal directly to a standard Ethereum address.
Setting or updating a withdrawal credential is a consequential, largely irreversible action for a validator operator, since it determines who controls access to the staked funds once they become withdrawable — this matters especially for liquid staking (see Kaavon's "Liquid Staking" glossary definition) providers and staking pools, where the withdrawal credential is typically set to a smart contract address that manages payouts to depositors rather than to any single individual's wallet.
Examples
- A solo staker typically sets their withdrawal credential to their own wallet address, ensuring only they can eventually withdraw their staked ETH and rewards.
- A liquid staking protocol sets its validators' withdrawal credentials to a smart contract that automatically distributes rewards and principal back to depositors.
