Custodial vs. Non-Custodial Wallets
A practical comparison of custodial and non-custodial wallets — who controls your keys, and what that means for you.

What to remember
- Custodial wallets are managed by a third party; non-custodial wallets are managed by you alone.
- Custodial wallets trade control for convenience and easier recovery.
- Non-custodial wallets require you to securely manage your own seed phrase, with no company fallback.
- Many people use a combination of both, depending on the purpose of the funds.
The core question: who holds the keys?
The most important distinction between wallet types is who actually controls the private keys. A custodial wallet means a third party holds them for you; a non-custodial wallet means you hold them yourself.
Custodial wallets: convenience, with trust required
With a custodial wallet, such as an exchange account, you access funds through a login rather than a key you personally manage. This is convenient and includes account-recovery options, but it means trusting that provider's own security and solvency.
Non-custodial wallets: full control, full responsibility
A non-custodial wallet gives you sole control over your private keys, typically backed up through a seed phrase. There's no company to call for account recovery — if the seed phrase is lost with no backup, the funds are generally unrecoverable.
Custodial
Non-Custodial
Who actually signs the transaction -- the provider, on a custodial wallet, versus you directly, on a non-custodial one.
Comparing the trade-offs
- Custodial: easier recovery, but funds depend on a third party's security and policies.
- Non-custodial: full independent control, but full personal responsibility for key security.
- Many people use both: custodial for active trading, non-custodial for longer-term holding.
"Not your keys, not your coins"
This common phrase captures the core trade-off: if you don't hold the private keys yourself, your access to funds ultimately depends on someone else's system continuing to work as expected and honoring your claim to those funds.
